Rosalind

Before anything else, I think it’s best to start with an update on Zelda.

Zelda returned to the no-kill kitty shelter around Thanksgiving. It was very sad and difficult for Chris and me. I felt as if I had failed at being a pet owner. I checked the shelter’s website at least weekly to see if Zelda had found a new home. It took until New Year’s until she was no longer listed as adoptable. I was happy to know that our former baby had found a new family to love her.

Now: On to our new story

Around the beginning of the year, Chris and I went into a pet store and encountered the cutest little face looking for a home. This 4 month old kitten was both snuggly and playful right off the bat. Chris and I immediately knew we had to adopt her. It took almost a full week of waiting, but two Fridays ago we were able to bring our kitten home.

I decided to name our new fur-baby Rosalind after Shakespeare’s heroine in As you Like it. The literary character and her feline counterpart are both clever and feisty with a deep affection for those they love. I sold this name to Chris by saying we could call her Roz after a character on “Frasier”, which is Chris’s favorite T.V. show.  After naming a cat after a video game character, I felt as though I had some leeway for Shakespeare.

Evening snuggles

In the past two and a half weeks I have fallen so hard for this little creature. Roz loves to snuggle and sleep on my chest at night. When I am working at my desk at home, she’ll come and plop down in my lap purring the whole time. She has these caramel colored eyes that could melt the iciest of hearts. She loves to play and her favorite toys include my hair, necklace, and the laser mouse…though any sort of balled up thing will do.

Rosalind is adorable, but she’s also a little stinker. She likes to jump on kitchen counters and tables.  She has a knack for walking in front of my monitor while I’m watching Netflix, putting her tiny body between me and MI-5. The worst though thing so far though? She is like a tiny bottomless garbage disposal; she eats all of the food she sees. Not only does she devour Tchai’s food if left unsupervised, but she’s also helped herself to cheesecake, turkey nachos, pepperoni pizza, and (oddly), butter.  It goes without saying that Chris and I aren’t leaving any food out in the kitchen anymore…or anywhere else for that matter.

Speaking of Tchai, she seems to be handling her new baby sister fairly well. Of course there’s been some hissing and swatting, but so far there haven’t been any major disputes. Tchai and Roz even sleep on the bed with us together (Tchai sleeps on the opposite end of the bed but hey, its progress!). Rosalind really loves her big sister and tries to get her to play daily…it doesn’t really work but it’s cute that Roz keeps trying. As I’m typing this out, Roz is hiding behind the dresser getting ready to pounce on her big sister. Somehow I don’t think Tchai will appreciate that.

I think that once Rosalind gets completely settled in (and I somehow find a way to keep her off the kitchen counters) she will be a great addition to our little family. Stay tuned for kitten exploits and, hopefully soon, more recipes.
